Globally: Harowayo village in Eastern Ethiopia has a lack of clean water and a serious shortage of food. The men and children are tending to the herds so the need for income generation falls on the women's shoulders. CBO's grant has enabled 12 chosen women to be trained in a goat project (goats given by our host organization, Global Hope Network) and small scale irrigation for the planting of vegetables both for their families and for sale. The women are excited and change is happening. The results will also free up children to attend school.
Locally: Elephant Circle
Doula: A trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth.
This is the foundation of Elephant Circle who used the CBO grant to assist the women of DWCF both with informational curriculum (classes in process of approval) and doula assistance. The vast majority of DWCF inmates birth at Denver Health which serves a diverse population of marginalized people including families of color, immigrants, and incarcerated folks. The staff of Elephant Circle have been helping develop the Denver Health Doula Program, which is a volunteer program that pairs a doula with a Denver Health patient in labor. These collaborative efforts have the potential of opening new doors for birth workers of all races to meet the needs of this community.
